W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. 101 Philodendron Micans Pink (in aquarium hanging pot)

Description

Philodendron micans, also known as the velvet-leaf philodendron, is a stunning tropical houseplant known for its soft, velvety, heart-shaped leaves that shimmer in shades of deep green, bronze, and pinkish-red, especially when young. While there isn't an officially recognized "pink" cultivar, the new growth often emerges with a rosy or coppery hue, which maybe referred to as "Philodendron micans pink."

Key Features

  • Leaf Color: New leaves emerge with a pinkish-bronze tone and mature to deep green with a velvety texture.
  • Growth Habit: Trailing or climbing; ideal for hanging pots or moss poles.
  • Size: Vines can grow up to 24 inches or more indoors.

 Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light enhances the pink and bronze tones. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Avoid overwatering—mushy stems are a sign of too much moisture.
  • Humidity: Prefers 50–60% humidity. A bathroom or a room with a humidifier works well.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix—1 part potting soil, 1 part orchid bark, 1 part perlite, and 1 part peat moss or coco coir.
  • Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer during spring and summer.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested

 Display Tip: Aquarium Hanging Pot

Using a clear hanging aquarium-style pot can beautifully showcase the trailing vines and root structure. Just ensure:

  • There’s adequate drainage (add a layer of LECA or pebbles).
  • The plant isn’t sitting in water.
  • You maintain high humidity and indirect light.
