Sumatra Leaf Catfish (Silurichthys indragiriensis)
Description
Description
Silurichthys indragiriensis is commonly known in the aquarium hobby as the Sumatra Leaf Catfish, a small, slender blackwater catfish native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the family Siluridae (sheatfishes).
Identification
- Elongated, leaf-like body adapted for camouflage among leaf litter.
- Small eyes and a flattened head.
- Typically reaches 10.5-11 cm (4-4.3 inches) in length.
Natural Habitat
- Found in Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung, Bintan, and parts of Peninsular Malaysia.
- Inhabits blackwater peat swamp forests, slow-moving streams, and areas rich in submerged leaf litter.
- Prefers acidic water with a pH around 4.0-6.5.
Behavior
- Mostly nocturnal, spending the day hidden beneath leaves and debris.
- Predatory but peaceful toward fish too large to swallow.
- Feeds on insects, aquatic invertebrates, and small live prey.
Aquarium Care
- Tank size: 20 gallons (75 L) or larger.
- Water temperature: 22-26°C (71-79°F).
- Soft, acidic water and subdued lighting are ideal.
- Provide abundant leaf litter, driftwood, and hiding places to mimic its natural habitat.
- Best kept with small peaceful species that are not aggressive feeders. Small shrimp and tiny fish may be viewed as prey.
Conservation
The species is currently assessed as Near Threatened because its specialized peat swamp habitat is being reduced and degraded throughout parts of its range.
For a planted blackwater aquarium, Silurichthys indragiriensis can be an unusual and attractive centerpiece species, especially for aquarists interested in Southeast Asian peat swamp biotopes.
