Hillstream Loach (Breviventralis SEW04)

Description

Sewellia breviventralis and the closely related Sewellia sp. ‘SEW04’ are fascinating species of hillstream loaches native to Vietnam, known for their unique adaptations to fast-flowing freshwater environments.

Sewellia breviventralis

  • Scientific Description: Described by Freyhof & Serov in 2000, this species is named for its short pelvic fins ("breviventralis") and is part of the Gastromyzontidae family
  • Habitat: Found in the Pako River in Vietnam, it thrives in rapid currents exceeding 1 m/s, often alongside other rheophilic species like Garra and Homaloptera
  • Size: Reaches up to 5.1 cm in standard length.
  • Morphology:
    • Elongated, flattened body.
    • No dark stripes or concentric bands on fins.
    • 15–21 large tubercles on pectoral-fin rays.
    • Lateral line with 58–64 scales.
  • Ecology: Feeds on aquatic invertebrates and is highly adapted to cling to rocks in turbulent waters.
  • Conservation Status: Listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat degradation

Sewellia sp. ‘SEW04’

  • Taxonomic Status: This form is not formally described and may represent S. breviventralis, S. diardi, or an entirely new species
  • Origin: Believed to originate from Hue Province, central Vietnam.
  • Habitat: Prefers shallow, fast-flowing, oxygen-rich headwaters with rocky substrates and minimal aquatic vegetation.
  • Aquarium Notes:
    • Requires high water flow (15–20x turnover per hour).
    • Feeds on biofilm, so mature tanks with algae growth are ideal.
    • Known to climb glass, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.
    • Grows to about 50–60 mm in standard length
