Rotala Nanjenshan

Description

Rotala nanjenshan (often sold as “Rotala sp. Nanjenshan”)

Care Guide & Retail Profile

Rotala nanjenshan is a slender, elegant red stem plant originating from Taiwan and valued for its soft pink-to-orange hues and fine texture. It sits nicely between easy Rotala species and demanding reds like R. macrandra, making it a popular choice for high-quality aquascapes and Dutch-style layouts.

Plant Overview

  • Scientific name: Rotala nanjenshan
  • Common trade names: Rotala Nanjenshan, Rotala sp. Nanjenshan
  • Family: Lythraceae
  • Origin: Taiwan (Nanjenshan / Nanjenshan area collections)
  • Growth form: Stem plant
  • Tank placement: Midground to background
  • Difficulty: Medium–Advanced

Size & Growth

  • Height: 20–40 cm (8–16 inches)
  • Stem profile: Thin, delicate stems
  • Growth rate: Moderate
  • Leaf shape: Narrow, lanceolate leaves
  • Leaf arrangement: Opposite along the stem

Produces a light, airy appearance compared to broader-leaved Rotala species.

Lighting
  • Lighting requirement: Medium–High
  • Under stronger light:
    • Colors shift toward pink, copper, and light red
  • Under lower light:
    • Leaves remain green with slight orange tones
    • Internode spacing increases

Bright, even lighting helps maintain dense growth in groups.

CO₂ & Fertilization

  • CO₂: Strongly recommended for best form
  • Nutrients: Regular macronutrients + micronutrients
    • Benefits from supplemental iron, but not as iron-hungry as R. macrandra

 CO₂ instability can cause:

  • Twisted new growth
  • Leaf drop at the base
  • Sparse stems

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–27 °C (72–81 °F)
  • pH: 5.5–7.0
  • GH: Soft to moderately soft (2–8 dGH)
  • KH: Low to moderate preferred

More forgiving than R. macrandra, but soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best coloration.

Trimming & Propagation

  • Trim tops once plants reach the surface
  • Replant cuttings for bushy clusters
  • Frequent trimming encourages:
    • Shorter internodes
    • Denser red coloration

For Dutch layouts, trim in staggered heights to create depth.

Coloration

  • Typical colors:
    • Light red
    • Pink
    • Copper-orange
  • Color intensity influenced by:
    • Light intensity
    • CO₂ stability
    • Iron availability
    • Controlled nitrate levels (not zero)

Produces a softer red compared to bold crimson Rotala species.

Best Uses

  • Dutch-style stem groupings
  • Transition plant between strong reds and green plants
  • Background accent in high-tech aquariums
  • Natural-style aquascapes needing subtle color warmth

Common Issues

Issue Likely Cause
Leggy growth Insufficient light
Pale or green leaves Low iron or low light
Melting after planting Transition from emersed growth
Curled new leaves CO₂ or nutrient imbalance
