Red Onyx Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)

Description

Red Onyx shrimp (Neocaridina davidi ‘Red Onyx’) is a captivating and relatively new variation of the backstripe shrimp (Neocaridina davidi). Its deep maroon to dark brown coloration resembles that of a rich, almost chocolatey red tone. Under good lighting, you can appreciate its deep shimmering wine-red hue, while in lower light conditions, it appears almost black. Here’s what you need to know about these stunning shrimps:

  1. Appearance:

    • The Red Onyx shrimp grows to around 1.5 inches in size.
    • Females are larger and more intensely colored than males.
    • The line is still being stabilized by breeders, so not all offspring will exhibit the same spectacular coloration as their parents.
  2. Aquarium Setup:

    • A 5+ gallon aquarium is suitable for beginners, while 10+ gallons are recommended for stability.
    • Ensure your tank is fully cycled, has a filter, and possibly a heater if ambient temperatures fluctuate.
    • Provide hiding places using rocks, driftwood, and live plants.
    • Use a dark substrate to enhance their colors.
    • Good lighting allows you to appreciate their full beauty.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Neocaridina shrimp are not too demanding:
      • Ammonia and nitrites must be 0 at all times.
      • Nitrates should preferably be <10.
      • Avoid copper-based medications, as they are toxic to shrimp.
      • Regular small water changes help maintain water quality.
  4. Diet:

    • Red Onyx shrimp are omnivorous.
    • Feed them a balanced diet of high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional treats like bloodworms.
  5. Tankmates:

    • Keep them with peaceful tankmates like other Neocaridina shrimp, small fish, or snails.
    • Avoid aggressive or predatory species.
  6. Availability:

    • Red Onyx shrimp are still relatively rare, but their popularity is growing due to their striking appearance.
