Description
Red Koi Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a popular freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking coloration and hardy nature.
Appearance
- Bright red to orange body with white “koi-like” patches
- Males have the distinctive “sword” extension on the lower tail fin
- Females are larger but lack the sword
Size
- Males: ~3–4 inches (excluding sword)
- Females: ~4–5 inches
Care Requirements
- Tank size: Minimum 20 gallons
- Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
- pH: 7.0–8.0 (slightly alkaline preferred)
- Water hardness: Moderate to hard
They’re very hardy, making them great for beginners.
Temperament
- Peaceful and active
- Males can be territorial with other males
- Best kept in groups with 1 male to 2–3 females
Diet

- Very easy to breed
- Females can store sperm and produce multiple broods
