Description

Red Koi Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a popular freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking coloration and hardy nature. 


Appearance

  • Bright red to orange body with white “koi-like” patches
  • Males have the distinctive “sword” extension on the lower tail fin
  • Females are larger but lack the sword

Size

  • Males: ~3–4 inches (excluding sword)
  • Females: ~4–5 inches

Care Requirements

  • Tank size: Minimum 20 gallons
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.0 (slightly alkaline preferred)
  • Water hardness: Moderate to hard

They’re very hardy, making them great for beginners.


Temperament

  • Peaceful and active
  • Males can be territorial with other males
  • Best kept in groups with 1 male to 2–3 females

Diet

  • Omnivores:
    • High-quality flakes or pellets
    • Frozen/live foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms)
    • Vegetables (blanched spinach, zucchini)

Breeding

  • Livebearers (like guppies and platies)
  • Very easy to breed
  • Females can store sperm and produce multiple broods
  • Fry should be separated or heavily planted tank used for survival
