Oryzias eversi Rice Fish Medium (Aquarium Glaser)
Description
Description
Oryzias eversi is a rare species of ricefish (family Adrianichthyidae) endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is especially notable because females are pelvic brooders, carrying fertilized eggs attached beneath their body until they hatch, which is an unusual reproductive strategy among ricefish.
Quick Facts
- Scientific name: Oryzias eversi
- Common name: Evers' ricefish / Pelvic-brooding ricefish
- Origin: Tilanga Springs (Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia)
- Adult size: Approximately 3.5 to 4 cm (1.4 to 1.6 in)
- Temperature: Around 22-26°C (72-79°F); native habitat is relatively cool at about 21-22°C.
- pH: Generally does well in neutral to slightly alkaline water.
- Temperament: Peaceful, suitable for species or community setups with similarly small fish.
Aquarium Notes
For aquarists, O. eversi is one of the more desirable Sulawesi ricefish due to its unique breeding behavior. They appreciate:
- Dense plants and floating cover
- Gentle water movement
- Excellent water quality
- Small live or frozen foods, though many accept quality prepared foods
Because they originate from a tiny natural habitat, maintaining captive populations is considered important.
