Orange Volcano Rili Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)
Description
Description
Orange Volcano Rili Shrimp are a striking variety of Neocaridina davidi freshwater shrimp, prized in aquariums for their vivid orange coloration combined with the unique “Rili” pattern.
What “Orange Volcano Rili” Means
- Orange → bright, often deep orange coloration
- Rili pattern → translucent or clear midsection with colored head and tail
- “Volcano” → usually refers to a more intense, fiery orange tone (selectively bred for stronger color)
They’re a selectively bred variant of cherry shrimp, so their care is very beginner‑friendly.
Basic Care Requirements
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
- pH: 6.5–7.8
- GH: 6–12 dGH
- KH: 2–6 dKH
- Stable water is more important than perfect numbers
Tank Setup
- Minimum size: 5 gallons (bigger is better for stability)
- Substrate: Any (dark substrate makes colors pop)
-
Plants: Highly recommended
- Moss (Java moss, Christmas moss)
- Floating plants
- Filtration: Sponge filter preferred (shrimp safe)
Diet
They’re omnivorous scavengers:
- Algae & biofilm (main natural food)
- Shrimp pellets
- Blanched veggies (zucchini, spinach)
- Occasional protein foods (once or twice weekly max)
Breeding
- Very easy to breed in freshwater (no special setup needed)
- Females carry eggs (“berried”) for ~2–3 weeks
- Babies hatch as tiny shrimp (no larval stage)
Tip: Dense moss helps baby survival.
Color & Quality Tips
- Strong lighting + dark background enhances color
- Feed carotenoid-rich foods (like spirulina)
- Selective breeding helps maintain the bright orange Rili pattern
Tank Mates
Safe with:
- Other peaceful shrimp
- Snails (Nerite, Ramshorn)
- Small, non-aggressive fish (e.g., ember tetras)
Avoid:
- Large or predatory fish (they will eat shrimp)
