Neon Borneo Sucker (Gastromyzon lepidogaster)
Description
Description
Gastromyzon lepidogaster, also known as the Neon Borneo Sucker, is a fascinating species of river loach.
Habitat: This species is endemic to northern Borneo, inhabiting swift, shallow streams with clear, oxygen-rich water. They are often found in riffles and runs, typically above or below cascades and waterfalls.
Appearance: The Neon Borneo Sucker undergoes a dramatic color transformation as it ages. Young fish start as small, nondescript black loaches, then change to bright orange in sub-adulthood, and finally to a bright reflective green when sexually mature2. Mature adults can switch between these color phases or display a combination of colors, giving them a holographic appearance2.
Diet: They are scavengers and grazers, feeding on algae, biofilm, and detritus in the wild2.
Behavior: These loaches are known for their ability to cling to rocks and other surfaces in fast-flowing water, thanks to their specialized morphology1.
Care Requirements: In an aquarium, they need very clean, slightly acidic to neutral, highly oxygenated water with a strong current. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended.
