Koi Gold Barb (Barbus schuberti "Koi") Aquarium Glaser Sm-Med
Description
Description
Barbus schuberti "Koi", also known as the Koi Gold Barb or Brokatbarbe Koi, is a selectively bred ornamental variant of the Gold Barb (Barbodes semifasciolatus). This variety is prized for its intensely vibrant coloration, resembling the patterns and hues of koi carp.
Appearance
- Coloration: Bright golden-yellow body with orange-red accents and sometimes white patches, mimicking koi patterns.
- Markings: May have irregular black or red blotches; coloration is more intense in males and during breeding.
- Size: Typically grows up to 7 cm (2.75 inches).
Genetics & Origin
- The "Koi" variant is a domesticated hybrid, not found in the wild.
- It likely includes genetic influence from other Barbodes species, such as the red-bellied Vietnamese barb (B. fernandezyepezi), contributing to its vivid red hues
- The name "schuberti" is not a valid scientific designation but a trade name honoring aquarist Thomas Schubert, who developed the original gold barb strain in the 1960s
