Koi Gold Barb (Barbus schuberti "Koi") Aquarium Glaser Sm-Med

Description

Barbus schuberti "Koi", also known as the Koi Gold Barb or Brokatbarbe Koi, is a selectively bred ornamental variant of the Gold Barb (Barbodes semifasciolatus). This variety is prized for its intensely vibrant coloration, resembling the patterns and hues of koi carp.

Appearance

  • Coloration: Bright golden-yellow body with orange-red accents and sometimes white patches, mimicking koi patterns.
  • Markings: May have irregular black or red blotches; coloration is more intense in males and during breeding.
  • Size: Typically grows up to 7 cm (2.75 inches).

Genetics & Origin

  • The "Koi" variant is a domesticated hybrid, not found in the wild.
  • It likely includes genetic influence from other Barbodes species, such as the red-bellied Vietnamese barb (B. fernandezyepezi), contributing to its vivid red hues
  • The name "schuberti" is not a valid scientific designation but a trade name honoring aquarist Thomas Schubert, who developed the original gold barb strain in the 1960s

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 18–24°C (64–75°F)
    • pH: 6.0–8.0
    • Hardness: Up to 10 dGH
  • Behavior: Peaceful, active schooling fish; best kept in groups of 6 or more
  • Diet: Omnivorous—accepts flakes, pellets, live/frozen foods, and vegetables
  • Tank Setup: Planted tank with open swimming space and moderate flow

Breeding

  • Spawning: Egg scatterers; use fine-leaved plants or spawning mops
  • Fry Care: Eggs hatch in ~48 hours; fry are light-sensitive and need infusoria or baby brine shrimp initially
