  • Family: Onagraceae
  • Origin: Southeastern USA (Florida, Texas, Louisiana)
  • Height: 15–30 cm (6–12 inches)
  • Placement: Midground (can work in foreground for larger tanks)
  • Leaf Shape: Thin, needle-like leaves
  • Color: Green to orange-red; intense red under high light and low nitrates

Water Parameters

  • Hardness: 3–16°dGH
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)

Lighting & CO₂

  • Lighting: Medium to High
(Bright light enhances compact growth and coloration)
  • CO₂: Recommended for dense, vibrant growth; without CO₂, stems are thinner and less colorful

Growth & Care

  • Growth Rate: Normal to Fast
  • Difficulty: Easy to Medium (hardy but sensitive to unstable parameters)
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich gravel or aquarium soil
  • Fertilization: Regular macro/micro nutrients; iron helps maintain color

Propagation

  • Method: Stem cuttings – trim tops or lateral shoots and replant
  • Trimming: Cut tops a few inches below desired height; encourages bushy growth and side shoots

Color Enhancement Tips

  • High Light + Low Nitrates = Redder Leaves
  • Strong PAR and red/blue spectrum lighting
  • CO₂ injection for compact, colorful growth

Special Features

  • Can grow submerged or emersed (may produce small yellow flowers emersed)
  • Ideal for contrast in aquascapes; pairs well with green plants
  • Provides shelter for small fish and fry
