Linkei Licorice Gourami (Parosphromenus linkei) 2.5-3cm

Description

The Linkei Licorice Gourami (Parosphromenus linkei) is a captivating freshwater fish that hails from the lush peat swamp forests of Borneo, specifically the Kalimantan Tengah province in Indonesia.

  1. Etymology:

    • The scientific name Parosphromenus linkei has an interesting backstory:
      • Parosphromenus comes from the Latin word “para,” meaning “beside,” and the generic name “Osphromenus.”
      • The specific epithet linkei honors German aquarist and labyrinth fish collector Horst Linke, who discovered this species alongside Norbert Neugebauer in 1990.
  2. Habitat and Distribution:

    • Linkei Licorice Gouramis inhabit peat swamp forests and associated blackwater streams.
    • Their natural environment is characterized by dense vegetation, minimal light penetration due to a thick canopy of branches, and darkly stained water rich in humic acids.
    • They occur sympatrically with their close relative, Parosphromenus opalios, in certain areas.
    • Unfortunately, their habitat is threatened, and they often survive only in remnants of heavily modified peat swamps.
  3. Appearance:

    • These gouramis have a ray-finned body with a silver base adorned by vertical black stripes.
    • Their unique coloration and striking appearance make them a favorite among aquarists.
    • Linkei Licorice Gouramis reach a maximum standard length of 30-35 mm.
  4. Aquarium Care:

    • A pair of Linkei Licorice Gouramis can thrive in an aquarium with base dimensions of 40 cm × 20 cm or equivalent.
    • While some breeders prefer a bare-bottom setup for ease of maintenance, you can use driftwood roots, branches, and clay pots to create shelter and potential spawning sites.
    • Water flow should be around 4-5 times the aquarium volume, and a good filter is essential.
  5. Behavior and Survival:

    • Linkei Gouramis are part of the Labyrinth fish family, equipped with an organ that allows them to take in oxygen from the surface of the water.
    • Their survival abilities in low-oxygenation conditions are remarkable.
