L236 Hypancistrus Pleco (often called Cracked Zebra Pleco or Super White Pleco)

Species Overview

  • Scientific Name: Hypancistrus sp. (L236)
  • Origin: Rio Xingu basin, Brazil (fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters)
  • Adult Size: 10–12 cm (4–4.7 inches) 
  • Lifespan: Typically 8–10 years with proper care 
  • Appearance: White or cream base color with black worm-line or cracked zebra patterns. Selective breeding has produced “Super White” variants with minimal black markings.

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for one; larger if keeping a group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 77–86°F (25–30°C) 
    • pH: 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral) 
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Filtration & Flow: Strong current and high oxygenation (powerheads or river manifold recommended).
  • Décor: Sand or fine gravel substrate, caves (slate, PVC, or ceramic), driftwood, and rocks for hiding spots. Plants are optional but hardy species can help with aesthetics.

Diet

  • Primary: Carnivorous—prefers high-protein foods.
  • Recommended Foods:
    • Frozen/live: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp
    • Prepared: Sinking carnivore pellets, occasional algae wafers
    • Vegetables: Zucchini, cucumber (as supplements).
  • Feeding Tip: Feed at night or after lights out—they are nocturnal and shy feeders.
