Imperial Lapis Tetra

Description

Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia, commonly known as the Lapis Tetra, belongs to the large family Characidae or Characins. These small characins hail from Brazil and typically measure about 3 to 4 cm in length. Although rarely sold, they exhibit fascinating characteristics.

Here are some key details about the Lapis Tetra:

  1. Origin: Lapis Tetras inhabit areas in rivers where trees grow and in slowly flowing tributaries. These biotopes often have acidic water due to tannins and other substances released from decomposing organic material.
  2. Distinctive Features:
    • A clear cyan mid-lateral line runs from the eye to the middle caudal fin rays.
    • Unlike most of its species, it lacks the elongated spot behind the gills and dark eye pigmentation.
    • Possesses 16-19 branched anal fin rays and 2-4 large teeth.
    • Has a relatively high body and small eyes.
  3. Size: Males reach around 3.3 cm, while females stay smaller at 2.8 cm.
  4. Aquarium Care:
    • Rare in the aquarium trade, Lapis Tetras thrive in soft water with a pH between 4.0 – 5.5 and low GH (<3).
    • Provide hiding places and densely planted environments for optimal coloration.
    • Dark, sandy substrate enhances their vibrant hues.
    • Keep the temperature between 24 – 28°C.
  5. Behavior: Generally calm, but males can display territorial behavior among themselves.

Remember, encountering these beautiful fish is a rare treat, so if you ever find them, consider providing them with an ideal aquarium environment to showcase their stunning colors! 🐟🌿
