Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri) is a gorgeous and peaceful freshwater species, prized for its shimmering colors and elegant finnage. 


Species Profile

  • Scientific Name: Nematobrycon palmeri
  • Common Name: Emperor Tetra
  • Family: Characidae
  • Origin: Colombia (slow-moving rivers and streams)
  • Adult Size: ~4–5 cm
  • Current Size: Usually sold at 2–3 cm

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small school
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 23–28°C (73–82°F)
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Aquascape: Heavily planted with shaded areas and open swimming space; subdued lighting enhances colors

Behavior & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful, slightly territorial males
  • Tankmates: Ideal for community tanks with other calm species (avoid fin-nippers)
  • Schooling: Best kept in groups of 6 or more; males display beautiful fin extensions

Diet

  • Omnivorous: High-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen/live foods (daphnia, brine shrimp)
  • Feeding Frequency: 2–3 times daily in small portions
