Description

Scientific Name: Mugilogobius adeia
  • Family: Gobiidae
  • Origin: Endemic to Lake Matano, Sulawesi, Indonesia
  • Size: Up to 4.3 cm total length 

Natural Habitat

  • Found in alkaline freshwater environments with pH above 8 
  • Prefers areas with empty snail shells (e.g., Tylomelania gemmifera) for shelter 
  • Lives among rocks, leaf litter, and submerged wood in Lake Matano

Aquarium Care

Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40–80 liters recommended for a small group.
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
  • Decor: Include ceramic tubes, snail shells, and plants like Microsorum pteropus (Java fern) 
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–29°C
    • pH: 8.0+
    • Hardness: GH 13, KH 7
    • Conductivity: ~500 µS/cm 

Feeding

  • Accepts frozen bloodworms, white mosquito larvae, and other small live/frozen foods 
  • Carnivorous diet; may prey on small fish or invertebrates.

Behavior & Breeding

  • Peaceful, but males can be territorial during spawning.
  • Sexing:
    • Males have yellow-edged dorsal fins and a more rounded head.
    • Females lack fin coloration and may appear fuller-bodied 

    Breeding Challenges

      • Spawning occurs on plant leaves or inside caves.
      • Females lay hundreds to thousands of tiny eggs.
      • Larvae are extremely small, lack yolk reserves, and are difficult to feed.
      • Attempts to raise larvae with microfoods like Liquizell have failed so far
