Galaxy Rasbora / Celestial Pearl Danio - (Celestichthys margaritatus) (Glaser)

Description

The Celestial Pearl Danio, also known as the Galaxy Rasbora (scientifically referred to as Danio margaritatus), is a captivating freshwater fish that has enchanted aquarists worldwide. Let’s dive into the fascinating details about this little gem:

  1. Species Summary:

    • The Celestial Pearl Danio was first introduced to the world in 2006. Originally discovered in small ponds in Myanmar, it was initially named Celestichthys margaritatus. Due to its unique appearance, it quickly became highly sought-after in the aquarium industry.
    • However, the popularity led to a decline in the wild population, endangering the species. Fortunately, breeders started successfully breeding them in captivity, stabilizing the wild population.
    • Scientists later realized that the fish belonged to the Danio family (not technically a rasbora species), leading to its new scientific name: Danio margaritatus.
  2. Appearance:

    • What captivated the aquarium community was the Celestial Pearl Danio’s stunning looks. These fish have dark blue bodies adorned with white or yellow dots, resembling a galaxy. Imagine tiny celestial constellations swimming in your tank!
  3. Lifespan:

    • In the right conditions, these delightful danios can live between 3 and 5 years in captivity.
    • Proper care is essential, as minor changes in water quality can significantly impact their health. Their peaceful nature makes them vulnerable when paired with aggressive tankmates.
  4. Tank Requirements:

    • Tank Size: They thrive in nano aquariums but are more versatile than you might think.
    • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature range of 68°F to 78°F (20°C to 26°C) and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Tank Mates: Choose peaceful companions; avoid aggressive fish.
    • Diet: Provide a varied diet, including high-quality flakes, frozen foods, and live or freeze-dried treats.
  5. Breeding:

    • Breeding Celestial Pearl Danios is possible in captivity. Provide fine-leaved plants for egg laying.
    • The fry are tiny and require infusoria or specialized fry food initially.
