Blue Pinoy Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Description

Blue Pinoy Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a stunning freshwater cichlid prized for its shimmering metallic blue coloration and graceful, flowing fins.

Appearance & Genetics

  • Coloration: Deep, iridescent blue over a dark body, often with black markings. The intensity of the blue increases with age
  • Genetics: A true Blue Pinoy carries two copies of the “Dark” gene (D/D) and at least one “Philippine Blue” gene (Pb), giving it a richer contrast than standard Philippine Blue angelfish
  • Size: Up to 6 inches in length and 8–10 inches in height including fins
  • Lifespan: Typically 8–10 years with proper care

Tank Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons for a pair; 55+ gallons recommended for groups
  • Ideal Conditions:
    • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 3–8 dGH
    • Nitrate: <20 ppm
  • Aquascaping:
    • Use tall plants (e.g., Amazon Swords, Java Ferns), driftwood, and vertical structures.
    • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
    • Gentle water flow is preferred; avoid strong currents

Diet

  • Omnivorous: Feed a mix of:
    • High-quality flakes and pellets (protein-rich)
    • Frozen/live foods: brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, mysis shrimp
    • Occasional vegetables: blanched spinach or peas

Behavior & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Semi-peaceful; may show territorial behavior during breeding
  • Tank Mates:
    • Good: Corydoras, larger tetras (e.g., Rummy Nose), peaceful gouramis, bristlenose plecos
    • Avoid: Fin-nippers (e.g., Tiger Barbs), aggressive cichlids, very small fish (may be eaten)

Breeding

  • Moderately difficult: Best achieved with a bonded pair.
  • Spawning occurs on vertical surfaces like broad leaves or slate.
  • Eggs are fertilized externally and guarded by parents
