Description

Apistogramma cacatuoides "Super Red", also known as the Super Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid, is a stunning and popular freshwater fish among aquarists. 


Species Overview

  • Scientific Name: Apistogramma cacatuoides
  • Common Name: Super Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid
  • Origin: Native to the Amazon Basin (Peru, Brazil), but the "Super Red" is a selectively bred variant.
  • Size: Males up to 3 inches (7.5 cm), females slightly smaller.
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care.

Appearance

  • Coloration: Bright red/orange fins with a contrasting body that can range from silver to golden.
  • Fins: Males have elongated, flowing dorsal and caudal fins with intense red coloration.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are larger and more colorful; females are smaller and turn bright yellow when ready to breed.

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a pair.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72–84°F (22–29°C)
    • pH: 5.0–7.2
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Aquascape: Dense planting, driftwood, caves (coconut shells, clay pots), and leaf litter to mimic their natural habitat.
  • Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish like tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras. Avoid fin-nippers or aggressive species.

Diet

  • Omnivorous: Accepts high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and live foods.
  • A varied diet enhances coloration and breeding readiness.

Breeding

  • Pairing: Best to start with a group and let pairs form naturally.
  • Spawning: Female lays eggs in a cave; she guards them while the male defends the territory.
