- The genus name, Hyphessobrycon, combines the Ancient Greek word “υπελάσσων” (hyphesson), meaning “of lesser stature,” used as a prefix, with the generic name Brycon.
- The specific epithet, amapaensis, refers to the state of Amapá in northeastern Brazil.

- This tetra is known only from a small area within the rio Preto and rio Maraca drainages in Amapá state, northeastern Brazil.

- Hyphessobrycon amapaensis inhabits small streams flowing through savanna grassland.
