Amano Shrimp (Caridina japonica) is a popular freshwater shrimp species in the aquarium hobby, known for its algae-eating abilities and peaceful nature. 

Scientific Classification

  • Scientific Name: Caridina multidentata (formerly Caridina japonica)
  • Common Name: Amano Shrimp
  • Origin: Japan, Taiwan, and parts of Korea

 Habitat & Behavior

  • Natural Habitat: Freshwater streams and rivers with clean, oxygen-rich water
  • Behavior: Peaceful, social, and active scavengers
  • Tank Role: Excellent algae eaters, often used in planted tanks for natural cleaning

 Size & Lifespan

  • Size: Up to 2 inches (5 cm)
  • Lifespan: 2–3 years, sometimes longer with optimal care

 Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 70–80°F (21–27°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • GH/KH: Moderate hardness preferred
