Coloration: The male Ajamaru Rainbowfish displays two distinct color phases:
- Yellow Phase: Dominant males exhibit a vibrant yellow coloration.
- Blue Phase: Some males transition to an intermediate phase with a higher degree of blue.
- Red Nose: As the common name suggests, they have a distinctive red nose.
- Habitat: These fish inhabit peat swamps and associated black water streams, where water is stained dark brown by humic acids and other chemicals from decaying organic material. The dense rainforest canopy above means that very little light penetrates the water surface, and the substrate is often littered with fallen tree branches and rotting leaves.
- Aquatic Plants: Their habitat may include aquatic plant species such as Cryptocoryne, Blyxa, Barclaya, Eleocharis, Utricularia, and Lymnophila.
