Electric Blue Balloon Molly

Description

Electric Blue Balloon Molly (Poecilia latipinna / hybrid strain)

Difficulty: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful, active
Size: 3–4 inches (females larger)
Lifespan: 3–5 years
Origin: Selectively bred aquarium strain

Electric Blue Balloon Molly is a selectively bred variant of the Standard Molly, known for its balloon-shaped body, iridescent electric-blue coloration, and peaceful nature. Excellent for community tanks and popular with beginners, though their balloon body shape requires slightly more attentive care due to swim bladder strain.

Care Requirements

Tank Size

  • Minimum 20 gallons for a small group.
  • They do best in groups of 4–6.

Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature 24–27°C (75–81°F)
pH 7.5–8.4
GH 10–25 dGH
Salinity Optional low-salinity (1–2 tsp/gal) helps long-term health

They prefer hard, alkaline water

Diet

Omnivorous with a strong herbivorous tendency. Offer:

  • High-quality flakes/pellets
  • Spirulina
  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)
  • Frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms)

Avoid high-fat diets to preserve swim-bladder health.

Temperament & Tankmates

Peaceful and active. Ideal tankmates include:

  • Platies
  • Swordtails
  • Guppies
  • Corydoras
  • Small rainbowfish
  • Peaceful barbs (avoid fin-nippers)

Avoid: large cichlids, aggressive barbs, or anything prone to harassment.

Breeding

Livebearers — extremely easy to breed.

  • Gestation: 4–6 weeks
  • Females can store sperm for months
  • Fry do best in:
    • Dense floating plants
    • Breeder nets
    • Fine-leaved plants (hornwort, guppy grass)

Parents may eat fry — provide cover if raising.

Because of their rounded body shape:

  • They are more prone to swim bladder issues
  • Need stable water parameters
  • Avoid overfeeding
  • Keep strong aeration and consistent temperatures
