Description

Madagascar Rainbowfish (Bedotia madagascariensis) is a vibrant, peaceful freshwater species native to the rivers and streams of eastern Madagascar. It’s a favorite among aquarists for its shimmering colors, active behavior, and shoaling nature. 

Description

  • Appearance: Slender body with shimmering silver scales and a subtle yellowish-brown base. Males display vibrant hues of red, orange, and blue, with black-edged fins and a dark lateral stripe. Females are more subdued in color and rounder in shape 
  • Size: Typically 3–6 inches (7–15 cm) in captivity 
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years on average, but can reach up to 8 years with optimal care 

Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a group of 5–6; ideally 4 feet in length for adult shoals 
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72–77°F (22–25°C)
    • pH: 6.5–8.5
    • GH: 8–25
    • TDS: up to 268 ppm
  • Aquascape:
    • Use fine sand or smooth gravel substrate.
    • Include dense vegetation (submerged and floating), driftwood, and shaded areas.
    • Gentle water flow and efficient filtration are essential.
    • Perform regular partial water changes to maintain low nitrate levels

  • Type: Omnivorous
  • Feeding:
    • Staple: High-quality flakes or pellets
    • Supplements: Live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp
    • Feed twice daily; ensure food is consumed within 5 minutes

Breeding

  • Method: Egg scatterers
  • Setup:
    • Use a heavily planted tank with fine-leaved plants and floating cover.
    • Males may become territorial during spawning.
  • Spawning:
    • Females lay sticky eggs among plants over several weeks.
    • Eggs hatch in 6–10 days depending on temperature.
    • Fry should be fed infusoria or powdered fry food, then newly hatched brine shrimp 
  • Tip: Avoid water changes during early fry development to prevent stress.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and sociable; best kept in groups of 6 or more.
  • Tankmates:
    • Other rainbowfish, tetras, corydoras, loaches, dwarf gouramis, and livebearers
