Orange Sunkist Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)

Description

Orange Sunkist Shrimp—also known as Orange Sakura, Pumpkin Shrimp, or simply Sunkist Shrimp—are a vibrant, beginner-friendly variety of Neocaridina davidi. Their bright orange coloration makes them a standout in any freshwater aquarium. 


🧬 Species Overview

  • Scientific Name: Neocaridina davidi
  • Common Names: Orange Sunkist Shrimp, Orange Sakura, Pumpkin Shrimp
  • Size: 1–1.2 inches (2.5–3 cm)
  • Lifespan: 1–2 years
  • Temperament: Peaceful, social, and active 

🏡 Tank Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (10+ gallons preferred for colonies)
  • Substrate: Dark substrate enhances their color
  • Plants & Decor: Live plants (Java moss, Anubias, Crypts), driftwood, and hiding spots
  • Filtration: Sponge filter or gentle HOB filter with pre-filter sponge
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting (6–8 hours/day)
  • Lid: Recommended to prevent escapes and maintain humidity

💧 Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 68–74°F (20–23°C)
  • pH: 7.0–7.6
  • GH (General Hardness): 7–9 dGH
  • KH (Carbonate Hardness): 2–6 dKH
  • TDS: 120–250 ppm
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm[1][2]

💡 Use remineralized RO water or safe tap water (check for copper and chlorine).


Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous
    • Algae wafers
    • Shrimp pellets (e.g., Shrimp King)
    • Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, carrots)
    • Biofilm and detritus
  • Feeding Frequency: 2–3 times per week; avoid overfeeding 

Breeding

  • Ease: Very easy in stable tanks
  • Reproduction: Females carry eggs for ~30 days
  • Fry Care: Shrimplets feed on biofilm; no special care needed
  • Note: Avoid mixing with other Neocaridina color strains to preserve color purity

Tank Mates

  • Compatible: Other peaceful shrimp, snails, small fish like ember tetras, rasboras, and pygmy corydoras
  • Avoid: Aggressive or large fish that may prey on shrimp
