Vampire Shrimp 3-4cm (Atya gabonensis) Aquarium Glaser

Description

The Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis) is a fascinating freshwater shrimp species, known for its unique appearance and behavior. Here are some details about its care requirements:

  1. Water Temperature:Vampire Shrimp prefer a tropical temperature range of about 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

  2. Habitat Preference:In the wild, Vampire Shrimp are found in slow-flowing or stagnant waters, such as rivers and streams, in parts of West Africa. In the aquarium, they appreciate a well-planted tank with hiding spots and gentle water flow.

  3. Feeding Habits:Vampire Shrimp are filter feeders. They use fan-like appendages to filter particles from the water, including algae and small organisms. In the aquarium, they can be fed with powdered or liquid invertebrate foods, microorganisms, and fine particulate matter.

  4. Water pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.

  5. Behavior: Vampire Shrimp are generally peaceful and non-aggressive. They are known for their unique feeding behavior, extending their fan-like appendages into the water to filter particles. They are interesting to observe and are not known to be aggressive toward tankmates.
Vampire Shrimp are typically solitary and may exhibit territorial behavior, especially around their chosen hiding spots.
Vampire Shrimp are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are more active during the night. They may rest or hide during the day, becoming more active in the evening.
Vampire Shrimp are bottom dwellers and may spend much of their time on the substrate or hiding in crevices. While they are not burrowers in the same way as some shrimp species, they do appreciate having hiding spots.

  6. Minimum Tank Size: A tank size of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a Vampire Shrimp. Providing ample hiding spots and areas with slow water flow is beneficial.

  7. Color Details: Vampire Shrimp have a unique appearance, with a flattened body and long, thin appendages resembling a fan. They are usually brown or gray with subtle patterns and can change their color slightly based on their environment.

When keeping Vampire Shrimp, it's important to provide a well-maintained tank with stable water parameters. Regular water changes, a suitable filtration system, and a varied diet will contribute to the well-being of these interesting and unique shrimp.
