Description

The L241 Golden Spotted Vampire Pleco (scientifically known as Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias) is a captivating freshwater fish that aquarists enjoy keeping. 

  1. Appearance:

    • The Vampire Pleco has a silhouette similar to other popular freshwater catfish species.
    • It features a flat bottom, an under turned mouth for gnawing on algae, and expansive fins.
    • Notably, it sports a tall, rayed dorsal fin that usually rests flat against its back but can be raised for swimming in strong currents.
    • The body coloration is predominantly dark black, with small white and yellowish dots covering every inch of the upper body, including the fins.
    • Males tend to have longer and broader heads than females, although sexual dimorphism is subtle.


  2. Size:

    • A full-grown Vampire Pleco typically reaches a size of just under 10 inches.
    • While not as large as some other pleco species, it still requires significant space and a well-designed underwater habitat.

  3. Lifespan:

    • Under proper care, Vampire Plecos can live up to 15 years.
    • Factors such as genetics, environmental conditions, and diet play a role in determining their overall health and longevity.

  4. Habitat and Origin:

    • The Vampire Pleco is native to the Orinoco drainage system in Colombia.
