Annie’s Dwarf Goby (Stiphodon annieae)

Description

Annie’s Dwarf Goby (Stiphodon annieae) is an exceptionally rare freshwater dwarf goby native to the captivating island of Halmahera in Indonesia. Let’s explore some fascinating details about this striking fish:

  1. Appearance:

    • The male Annie’s Dwarf Goby steals the spotlight with its intense neon red and blue coloration. These vibrant hues create a mesmerizing display.
    • Females, although less colorful, still possess attractive markings that make them stand out.
  2. Habitat and Behavior:

    • Annie’s Gobies thrive in well-established nano aquariums. They primarily graze on algae and biofilm.
    • Social dynamics differ between males and females. Males tend to be solitary, while females form loose aggregations.
    • In captivity, it’s best to house a single male alongside two or more females. Compatible tank mates should prefer similar environmental conditions, especially brisk, oxygen-rich waters.
    • Suitable companions include small Rasboras, Tetras, Hillstream Loaches, and other non-aggressive fish. They can also coexist with Dwarf Shrimp, although occasional shrimp fry consumption may occur.
    • Avoid larger, predatory, or highly active fish that could stress the Gobies.
  3. Ideal Habitat:

    • Mimic their natural preference for strong water flow and pristine conditions.
    • Provide hiding spots like crevices, caves, and small openings for territory establishment.
    • Annie’s Gobies enjoy burrowing in fine sand, partially burying themselves and leaving only their heads and tails exposed.
