Tanganyika Killifish (Lamprichthys tanganicanus) is a fascinating species native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa.

Size:

  • Males can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches), while females are generally smaller

Habitat:

  • They are endemic to Lake Tanganyika and are often found in large schools near rocky shores and pelagic zones

Water Conditions:

  • They thrive in water with a pH of 8-8.5 and temperatures between 23-25Β°C (73-77Β°F)

Diet:

  • Their diet mainly consists of live and frozen foods such as Mysis, Artemia, and mosquito larvae. They can also accept some dry foods like flakes

Breeding:

  • Males perform a courtship dance to entice females to spawn. The eggs are usually deposited in crevices in rocks and are often removed and reared separately in captivity

Aquarium Care:

  • They require a minimum tank size of 90 cm (36 inches), though larger tanks are preferable to house groups. They are sensitive to poor water quality and can be susceptible to disease, so careful acclimatization is necessary
