Rotala Nanjenshan

Description

Common Name: Rotala Nanjenshan
Scientific Name: Rotala sp. ‘Nanjenshan’
Origin: Taiwan (Nanjenshan region)
Type: Fine-leaf stem plant
Growth Rate: Medium–Fast
Difficulty: Moderate
Placement: Midground to background
Colour: Light green to slightly golden under strong light

Overview

Rotala ‘Nanjenshan’ is a delicate, fine‑textured stem plant with a soft, feather‑like appearance. It forms dense, bushy groups when provided with stable CO₂ and decent lighting. Its flowing, airy texture makes it a favourite in nature-style aquascapes and Iwagumi layouts.

Although visually similar to Rotala wallichii, this plant is easier, hardier, and more adaptable, while still offering a refined, “high-end” aquascape look.

Key Care Requirements

Lighting

  • Medium to high light recommended for compact, bushy growth.
  • Low light results in long, sparse stems and dull coloration.

CO₂

  • Recommended
  • Helps maintain tight internodes and lush density.

Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature 22–28°C (72–82°F)
pH 5.8–7.4
GH 3–10
KH 1–6

Substrate

  • Grows in any substrate but prefers nutrient-rich soil.
  • Root tabs help if kept in sand or gravel.

Fertilization

  • Responds well to regular micronutrients, especially iron.
  • Appreciate stable macros (NO₃ / PO₄ / K) for steady growth.

Growth & Propagation

  • Trim tops to maintain shape; replant healthy cuttings.
  • Side shoots develop after trimming, making the plant bushier.
  • Due to its fine leaves, trimming helps prevent bottom shading.

Tank Compatibility

  • Excellent for community aquariums.
  • Safe for shrimp tanks.
  • Avoid tanks with plant‑eating cichlids or goldfish.

Common Issues

Issue Likely Cause
Sparse, leggy growth Low light or lack of CO₂
Browning at bottoms Stems shaded due to poor trimming routine
Melting after planting Normal adaptation—recoverable with stability
Stunted tips CO₂ inconsistency or micronutrient imbalance
