Description

Black Medaka Rice Fish (Oryzias latipes) is a visually striking freshwater species known for its deep, dark coloration that contrasts beautifully against bright plants and substrates 

  • Size: They typically grow to about 1.2–1.6 inches (3–4 cm) in length
  • Lifespan: They can live for 2–4 years under good conditions
  • Habitat: Originating from East Asia, they inhabit calm, shallow water bodies like rice paddies, ponds, and slow-moving streams with dense vegetation
  • Behavior: They are schooling fish, happiest in groups of six or more, and are active swimmers
  • Tank Setup: A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a small group, with dark sand or gravel substrate, live plants, and moderate lighting to enhance their appearance
  • Diet: They are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet, including high-quality micro-pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and vegetable matter
  • Breeding: They are prolific breeders, with females carrying adhesive eggs that are deposited on plants or other surfaces
