Appearance

  • Coloration: Chocolate-brown with a pale mottled underbelly and distinct orange eyes
  • Size: Can grow up to 19.4 cm (about 7.6 inches)

Habitat and Tank Requirements

  • Natural Habitat: Found in slow-moving rivers and streams in Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, and Indonesia
  • Tank Size: Requires a spacious tank, ideally 30 gallons or more.
  • Water Conditions: Prefers warm water with temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F). The water should be slightly alkaline.
  • Tank Setup: Needs a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots like driftwood, caves, and dense vegetation. A soft, sandy substrate is recommended to allow for natural wallowing behavior

Behavior and Compatibility

  • Behavior: Nocturnal and relatively shy, becoming more active during dawn and dusk. It is an active hunter, preying on smaller fish, crustaceans, and benthic animals
  • Tank Mates: Best kept alone or with very carefully selected tank mates due to its predatory nature
