Heros sp. (Turquoise Lago Jua)

Description

 Heros sp. "Turquoise Lago Juá" is a beautiful and relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby. This species is part of the genus Heros, which is in need of scientific revision due to the variety of populations that exist

Key characteristics:

  • Size: They can grow up to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length
  • Habitat: These fish are believed to originate from the Lago do Juá, the mouth of the Rio Tapajós near Santarém in the state of Pará, Brazil.
  • Appearance: Males typically have large red spots on their faces and lack the worm-like pattern seen in other Heros species from the Tapajós and Madeira regions. They are known for their striking turquoise coloration

Aquarium Care:

  • Water Conditions: They thrive in clear, very clean water with temperatures between 28-32°C (82-90°F). The water should be soft and slightly acidic, especially for breeding
  • Diet: They require a diet with a high proportion of plant-based foods
  • Behavior: Like other Heros species, they are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding
