Miyuki rice fish, also known as Miyuki Medaka or Oryzias latipes, is a stunning and hardy freshwater species that’s gaining popularity among aquarists. 


About Miyuki Rice Fish

  • Appearance: Known for their iridescent, metallic sheen, especially visible from above. Varieties include Platinum Blue, White, Red, Gold, and Black Miyuki.
  • Size: Typically 1.2–1.6 inches (3–4 cm).
  • Lifespan: Up to 4–5 years in captivity.
  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in small schools.
  • Viewing: Their beauty is best appreciated from a top-down view, making them ideal for shallow aquascapes or patio ponds.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 64–82°F (18–28°C)
    • pH: 6.5–8.0
    • GH: 6–20
  • Diet: Omnivorous – feed with medaka-specific flakes/pellets, live/frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp), and occasional plant-based foods.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Planted tanks with floating plants are ideal.
    • Light-colored substrate enhances their visual appeal.
    • Moderate to bright lighting brings out their shimmer.
    • Use a lid or floating plants to prevent jumping.

Breeding

  • Ease: Very easy to breed.
  • Spawning: Females carry eggs on their anal fins before depositing them among fine-leaved plants.
  • Incubation: Eggs hatch in 10–14 days depending on temperature.
