Albino Red Tail Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis)

Description

“Albino Red Tail Paradise Fish are hardy, colourful labyrinth fish with a striking red tail and flowing fins. They thrive in unheated tanks, making them perfect for Canadian homes. Semi-aggressive but full of personality — ideal as a single centrepiece fish in a planted aquarium.”

Common Name: Albino Red Tail Paradise Fish
Scientific Name: Macropodus opercularis
Origin: East Asia (albino selectively bred strain)
Adult Size: 7–10 cm
Lifespan: 4–8 years
Difficulty: Moderate
Temperament: Semi‑aggressive
Swimming Zone: Mid–top

Appearance

This albino morph of the classic Paradise Fish displays:

  • Bright red tail with translucent edging
  • Creamy to pale‑gold body coloration
  • Red eyes (albino trait)
  • Long flowing fins and elegant labyrinth fish body shape

They are striking centrepiece fish, especially in planted tanks.

Care Requirements

Tank Size

  • 20 gallons+ recommended
  • Provide space and line‑of‑sight breaks to reduce territorial behaviour.

Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature 18–26°C (they tolerate cooler water extremely well)
pH 6.5–7.8
Hardness Soft to moderately hard
Flow Low

Diet

They are eager feeders with a preference for protein-rich foods:

  • Pellets and flakes
  • Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis
  • Live foods (fruit flies, daphnia)
  • Occasional vegetable matter

High‑quality diet enhances fin colour and aggression control.

Temperament & Tankmates

Paradise Fish are labyrinth fish similar to gouramis, and males can be territorial.

Compatible tankmates (with space):

  • Peaceful, fast-moving fish
  • Danios
  • White Cloud Minnows
  • Larger rasboras
  • Loaches
  • Snails & some shrimp (though may hunt smaller shrimp)

Avoid:

  • Bettas
  • Other Paradise Fish males
  • Slow long‑finned species (they may nip)

A single male per tank is recommended unless the aquarium is large and heavily decorated.

Breeding

Fairly easy and similar to betta breeding:

  • Males build a bubble nest at the surface
  • Courtship involves fin flaring and displays
  • Eggs are placed into the nest and guarded
  • Fry hatch in 1–2 days
  • Use infusoria, then baby brine shrimp or microfoods

Males can be aggressive during breeding — separate after spawning if needed.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Dense plants (anubias, vallisneria, floating plants)
  • Driftwood for barriers
  • Gentle sponge or internal filtration
  • Dim lighting enhances colour and reduces stress

They display best in tanks with soft shadows and lots of cover.
