Otocinclus Negros Med-Large

Description

Otocinclus Negros are miniature algae-eating catfish that grow to a maximum length of 3.5 cm. Similar to other species of armored catfish (Loricariidae), they are virtually covered with rows of protective bony scales, providing defense against predators. The structure of their mouths is adapted for efficiently nibbling on algae without damaging plants. Additionally, it aids them in coping with currents in their natural habitat. Their tails and fins are small, and the lateral fins are positioned close to the abdomen.

These diminutive catfish inhabit exceptionally clean waters in rivers with both fast and calm currents, primarily in the water bodies of central South America (Paraguay, Argentina). Since 2011, their scientific name has been Otothyropsis piribebuy.

  1. Temperature: Otocinclus Negros thrives within a temperature range of 18°C to 25°C, although they can tolerate fluctuations up to 30°C. Maintaining the aquarium temperature within this range is crucial for their well-being.

  2. Minimum Size Tank: Provide a tank with a minimum capacity of at least 30 liters to accommodate a group of 4-5 Otocinclus Negros individuals. This size ensures a suitable environment for their habits and needs.

Feeding Habits: Otocinclus Negros are miniature algae-eating catfish with a diet that includes a variety of foods. They efficiently nibble on algae without causing harm to plants. Their diet can consist of nettle leaves, catappa leaves, pumpkin, zucchini, frozen and live foods, and dry pellets.

Habitat Preference: These catfish inhabit exceptionally clean waters in rivers with both fast and calm currents. They are commonly found in the water bodies of central South America, specifically in Paraguay and Argentina.

Water pH Level: Maintain a suitable water pH level within the recommended range to replicate the conditions of their natural habitat. Understanding their preferred pH contributes to their overall health.

Behavior: Otocinclus Negros are active around the clock, working on leaves during the day and moving on aquarium glass in the evening. They prefer living, feeding, and spawning close to the bottom of the aquarium, rising to the surface only for a gulp of air or during breeding periods.

A notable characteristic of Otocinclus is their schooling behavior. To ensure their well-being and reproduction, it is advisable to keep a minimum of 5-6 individuals in a home aquarium.

These catfish prefer living close to the bottom of the aquarium, exhibiting typical bottom-dwelling behavior.

Color and Other Details: Otocinclus Negros have a darker body compared to other Otocinclus species, with golden-brown coloration and darker spots on the sides and back. They are inconspicuous and often rise to the surface for a gulp of air or during breeding periods.

Breeding: Breeding Otocinclus Negros in an aquarium is possible. Slightly increased water flow and alternating with cooler water can stimulate them to spawn. Females lay individual eggs on aquarium glass, which are later fertilized by males. Raising the fry in the same aquarium is feasible.

Otocinclus Negros are an undemanding addition to aquariums, contributing to a clean environment without disturbing other tank residents. Whether in elaborate aquascapes, Dutch-style aquariums, or regular home setups, these catfish enhance the aesthetic appeal while maintaining tanks with diverse vegetation.
