Description
Description
Neon Tetra
The Neon Tetra, one of the most colorful and charismatic freshwater fish for your aquarium! Native to the Amazon River basin, this small fish has been captivating aquarists since the 1930s. Just two and a half centimeters in length, the Neon Tetras dazzle with vibrant neon blue and red hues which are brighter in males than females. While easy to care for, these fish require a well-maintained environment. Ideal water parameters include temperatures between 75- and 82-degrees Fahrenheit, and water pH levels should be kept between 6.0 and 7.5.
They are peaceful, schooling fish and do best in a community aquarium of other non-aggressive species. Neon Tetras are omnivores, feeding off both plant and animal matter. In their natural habitat, they feed off insect larvae, microorganisms and algae, so a balanced diet of flakes, frozen, freeze-dried, or live food will keep them healthy and happy. So why are they called Neon Tetras? The name comes from German aquarium enthusiasts who created the first artificially bred Neon Tetras in the 1950s. They observed the intense blue and red hues from the fish’s sides that made the fish appear to “glow” in the light, and thus its unique name was born! If you’re looking for a lively, colorful addition to your aquarium, the Neon Tetra is a great choice. With bright colors, peaceful behavior, and easy maintenance, it is sure to become a beloved addition to your home aquarium.
