Corydoras Julii (Leopard)

Description

Corydoras julii, often called the Julii Cory or Leopard Cory, is a charming and peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish popular in freshwater aquariums.

Corydoras Julii (Julii Cory / Leopard Cory)

  • Size: Typically grows to about 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches).
  • Coloration: Pale silver or white body with fine black spots and a distinctive horizontal black line along the mid-body.
  • Pattern Note: Often confused with Corydoras trilineatus (Three-lined Cory), which has more reticulated (net-like) patterns rather than distinct spots.

Natural Habitat

  • Native to eastern Brazil, found in slow-moving rivers and streams with sandy or muddy substrates.
  • Prefers shaded areas with leaf litter and submerged roots.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Soft to moderately hard water
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to protect their sensitive barbels.
  • Diet: Omnivorous – sinking pellets, wafers, frozen/live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, social, and best kept in groups of 5 or more.

Breeding

  • Egg layers; spawn on flat surfaces or aquarium glass.
  • Triggered by cooler water changes and high-protein diets.
  • Adults may eat eggs, so a breeding tank or egg protection is recommended.
