Red Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii) 4cm
Description
Description
Red Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a popular freshwater fish species native to North and Central America, ranging from Veracruz, Mexico, to northwestern Honduras
Appearance: Males are known for their distinctive "sword" – an elongated lower lobe of the caudal fin. They typically grow up to 14 cm, while females can reach up to 16.
Habitat: They thrive in swift-flowing, heavily vegetated rivers and streams, but can also be found in warm springs and canals.
Diet: Omnivorous, their diet includes plants, small crustaceans, insects, and annelid worms. They are hardy and adaptable, making them a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. They prefer a tank with some vegetation and a moderate water flow.
Breeding: Swordtails are livebearers and can reproduce easily in captivity. A ratio of one male to several females is recommended to prevent females from being overly harassed.
