Red Beckford's Pencilfish (Nannostomus beckfordi var. "Red") is a striking and peaceful freshwater nano fish, popular among aquarists for its vivid coloration and active schooling behavior. 

 Appearance

  • Coloration: Bright red body with a bold black horizontal stripe.
  • Size: Typically grows to about 1.2–1.4 inches (3–3.5 cm).
  • Body Shape: Slender and pencil-like, true to its name.

 Habitat & Tank Setup

  • Origin: Native to South America, but the red variety is often tank-bred.
  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons, though larger is better for schools.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 64°–82°F (18°–27.7°C)
    • pH: 5.0–8.0 (prefers slightly acidic)
    • KH: 4–8 dKH
  • Environment: Soft, tannin-rich water with leaf litter and live plants mimicking their natural habitat 

Behavior & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups of 6 or more.
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with other small, peaceful fish and adult dwarf shrimp (though they may eat shrimp fry).
  • Swimming Level: Primarily top to mid-water, but can explore all levels.
