Corydoras loretoensis is a lesser-known but charming species of Corydoras catfish, native to the Loreto region of Peru. 


Species Overview

  • Scientific Name: Corydoras loretoensis
  • Common Name: Loreto Cory
  • Family: Callichthyidae
  • Origin: Amazon River basin, particularly around Loreto, Peru
  • Size: ~2 inches (5 cm)
  • Lifespan: 5–7 years
  • Temperament: Peaceful, social, bottom-dweller

Natural Habitat

  • Found in slow-moving, shallow streams with leaf litter, soft sandy substrates, and dense vegetation
  • Water is typically soft and slightly acidic, with low light penetration

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Fine sand (to protect their sensitive barbels)
