Description
Description
Blue Guianacara (Guianacara owroewefi) is a beautiful and relatively peaceful cichlid species native to South America, specifically found in the rivers of Suriname and French Guiana.
-
Temperature: Blue Guianacara thrives in tropical temperatures ranging from 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 28 degrees Celsius).
-
Minimum Tank Size: A tank with a capacity of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or a small group of Blue Guianacara. A larger tank can be beneficial for providing more swimming space.
Feeding Habits: Blue Guianacara is omnivorous. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small invertebrates.
Habitat Preference: These cichlids are found in slow-moving rivers and tributaries with sandy or muddy substrates. They appreciate a tank with similar conditions, including the addition of driftwood and rocks to create hiding spots.
Water pH Level: Blue Guianacara prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. Aim for a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
Behavior: Blue Guianacara is generally peaceful for a cichlid species but can become territorial, especially during the breeding season. Provide adequate hiding spots and territories to minimize aggression.
While they are not strict schooling fish, Blue Guianacara tends to be more comfortable and less stressed when kept in groups. A small group of 3 to 5 individuals is ideal.
They may claim territories within the tank, including the substrate.
Color: As the name suggests, Blue Guianacara is known for its stunning blue coloration. The intensity of the blue can vary among individuals and is more prominent during breeding displays.
Other Details: These cichlids are known for their interesting courtship and breeding behaviors. Provide flat surfaces or small caves for them to use as potential spawning sites. The male may develop more extended dorsal and anal fins during the breeding season.
Remember to monitor water parameters regularly, perform partial water changes, and provide a well-balanced diet to ensure the health and well-being of Blue Guianacara in captivity.
