Zebra Otocinclus (Otocinclus Cocama) X- Large (Aquarium Glaser)

Zebra Otocinclus is widely regarded as the rarest and most visually striking species of Otocinclus. Native to Peru, it is instantly recognizable by its bold black-and-white zebra striping, setting it apart from common otos. Due to limited collection localities and poor survival during transport, it remains uncommon and premium-priced in the aquarium trade.

• Lifespan: 3–5 years with excellent care This species was described relatively recently (1997) and is taxonomically distinct from common Otocinclus types such as O. vittatus or O. macrospilus.

  • Shallow, slow- to moderate-flow rivers

Zebra Otocinclus live in large shoals in nature, grazing continuously on algae and aufwuchs growing on plants and submerged surfaces.

Appearance 

• Body pattern: Thick, contrasting black zebra bands over a white to cream base
• Tail: Distinct W-shaped black marking on the caudal peduncle (diagnostic trait)
• Eyes: Pronounced iris crescent typical of southern Otocinclus
• Body shape: Compact but slightly deeper-bodied than some other Otos

• Social behavior: Obligate shoaling species — minimum 6, ideally 8–12+ 

When kept singly or in small numbers, Zebra Otos often fail to feed, become lethargic, and deteriorate rapidly.

Aquarium Care Requirements

Tank Size

• Minimum: ~55 L / 15 gallons (for a proper group)
• Larger tanks provide stability and more grazing surface 

 Water Parameters

Zebra Otos are less forgiving than common species and demand pristine conditions:

• Temperature: 22–26 °C (72–79 °F)
• pH: 5.5–7.2
• Hardness: 1–10 dGH (soft preferred)
• Flow: Gentle to moderate
• Water quality:
  • Ammonia & nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm 

Only suitable for fully established aquariums (8–12+ weeks old).

Diet & Feeding (CRITICAL)

Zebra Otocinclus are specialized aufwuchs grazers:

Primary foods:

• Soft green algae
• Brown diatoms
• Biofilm on leaves, glass, and driftwood

Mandatory supplementation:

• High-quality algae wafers (spirulina-rich)
• Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach
• Occasional frozen microfoods (cyclops, daphnia)

Compatibility

Excellent tankmates:

• Small tetras (e.g., ember, green neon)
• Rasboras
• Pygmy Corydoras
• Dwarf shrimp (Amano, Neocaridina)

Avoid:

• Large or aggressive fish
• Fast, competitive feeders
• Copper-based medications 

Breeding

• Extremely rare in home aquariums
• Egg scatterers on plants or glass
• No parental care
• Fry require biofilm-rich environments and microscopic foods
