Tiger Teddy (Neoheterandria elegans) Medium Aquarium Glaser

Description

Neoheterandria elegans commonly known as the Tiger Teddy, is a small and captivating livebearing fish. Here are some key details about this species:

Origin: Endemic to the Río Atrato drainage in northwestern Colombia.
Appearance: Males grow up to 2 cm (0.79 inches) and females up to 2.5 cm (0.98 inches). They have a silver front half and alternating gold and black vertical bars on the rear half.
Tank Requirements: They thrive in heavily planted aquariums with gentle filtration. Ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F) and a pH of 7.0 to 8.0.
Diet: Omnivorous, they accept most foods, including small live or frozen varieties like Artemia or Daphnia, and crushed dry foods¹.
Behavior: Peaceful but shy, they are best kept in small colonies. Females can sometimes be aggressive, so a heavily planted setup helps reduce stress¹.
Reproduction: They exhibit a unique reproductive method called superfoetation, where fry at different stages of development are present in the uterus simultaneously. Fry are dropped continuously rather than in defined broods.

These fish are relatively easy to care for and make a charming addition to nano or species-specific aquariums.
