Description
Perugia's Limia (Limia perugiae), also known as the Black-Barred Molly, is a small livebearer fish belonging to the family Poeciliidae.
Size:
- They typically grow to about 5-7 cm in length
Habitat:
- Native to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, they are found in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They inhabit a variety of freshwater environments, including streams, lakes, and even hypersaline waters
Appearance:
- Males are especially colorful, with blue hues on their bodies contrasted by yellow caudal fins with black margins and black dorsal fins. Females are generally less colorful but still exhibit attractive patterns.
Diet:
- They are omnivorous, feeding on detritus, algae, and a variety of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates
Aquarium Care:
- They require a minimum tank size of 20 gallons for a small group. It's important to provide a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots. They thrive in water with a pH of 7.0-8.0 and temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F)
Breeding:
- Females give birth to live young, and the species is known for its prolific breeding in captivity
