Description

Satanoperca jurupari, commonly known as the Demon Eartheater, is a fascinating South American cichlid prized for its peaceful nature, unique feeding behavior, and striking appearance.

  • Common Names: Demon Eartheater, Jeweled Eartheater
  • Family: Cichlidae
  • Origin: Amazon River Basin (Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, French Guiana)

Habitat & Tank Setup

  • Natural Habitat: Slow-moving rivers, floodplain lakes, muddy or sandy substrates with leaf litter and submerged wood 
  • Tank Size: Minimum 210 × 60 cm base (approx. 750+ liters) 
  • Substrate: Fine sand is essential for their natural sifting behavior
  • Decor: Driftwood, branches, and plants attached to wood (avoid rooted plants in substrate)

    • Temperature: 23–28°C (73–82°F)
