Species Overview
  • Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare (color morph)
  • Appearance: Vibrant blue body with shimmering metallic tones; long, flowing fins.
  • Origin: Amazon Basin (freshwater variant) or Indo-Pacific (marine species with similar name).
  • Size: Up to 6 inches in body length; height including fins can reach 8 inches
  • Lifespan: Typically 8–12 years with proper care. 

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for one; 55 gallons or more for a pair or community setup. 
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–8 dGH)
  • Setup: Tall tank with dense planting (Amazon swords, Anubias), driftwood, and hiding spots to mimic natural habitat. 
  • Filtration: Moderate flow; avoid strong currents.

Diet

  • Staple Foods: High-quality flakes or pellets.
  • Protein Treats: Brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia (live or frozen).
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasional blanched spinach or zucchini.
  • Feeding Frequency: Adults 2–3 times daily; juveniles 3–4 times. 

Behavior & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Semi-peaceful but territorial during breeding.
  • Ideal Tank Mates: Larger tetras (black skirt, bleeding heart), gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras catfish, plecos.
  • Avoid: Fin-nippers (e.g., tiger barbs), very small fish (neons, guppies), aggressive cichlids. 

Breeding

  • Conditions: Warm water (78–80°F), slightly acidic pH (6.5–6.9), tall tank with flat surfaces for egg-laying.
  • Behavior: Pairs clean a leaf or flat surface and lay eggs; parents guard fry aggressively.

  • Blue Sapphire Angelfish are a selectively bred color morph, not a separate species. Their striking blue sheen depends on genetics and proper lighting.
