Blue Barred Barb ('Barbus' Faciolatus)
Description
Description
Blue-barred barb, scientifically known as Puntius faciolatus, is a freshwater fish species native to Sri Lanka. These barbs are known for their striking appearance, characterized by their vibrant blue and silver coloration, with vertical bars along their bodies.
-
Temperature: Blue-barred barbs prefer a tropical aquarium environment with water temperatures ranging from 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C). Maintaining stable water temperatures within this range is crucial for their overall health and well-being.
-
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons (113 liters) is recommended for a small school of blue-barred barbs. Providing ample swimming space and ensuring suitable hiding spots with plants or decorations is essential for their comfort and security.
Habitat Preference: Originating from Africa, Blue Barred Barbs are typically found in slow-moving rivers and streams with vegetation. In captivity, they appreciate a well-planted tank with open swimming areas.
Water pH Level: Maintaining a slightly acidic to neutral pH level is suitable for Blue Barred Barbs. The pH range should be around 6.0 to 7.5.
Behavior: Blue Barred Barbs are generally peaceful but can exhibit fin-nipping behavior, especially during mating or if the tank is overcrowded. Keeping them in a properly sized school helps minimize aggression.
Blue Barred Barbs are shoaling fish, meaning they prefer to be kept in groups of their own kind. A group of at least 6 individuals is recommended to reduce stress and enhance their natural behaviors.
Blue Barred Barbs are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They primarily occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.
Color and Other Details: The Blue Barred Barb gets its name from the distinctive blue horizontal bars on its body. These bars contrast against a silver or gold background. Males may have more vibrant colors, especially during the breeding season. They grow to a size of around 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm).
Keep in mind that individual fish can have their own personalities, and variations in behavior can occur. Regular water changes, appropriate tank conditions, and a balanced diet contribute to the overall health and well-being of Blue Barred Barbs in captivity.
