Description
Description
The Hyphessobrycon socolofi, also known as the Lesser Bleeding Heart Tetra, is a captivating fish species found in the Amazonas state, Brazil. Let’s dive into some interesting details about this aquatic beauty
-
Distribution
- The Hyphessobrycon socolofi is known to inhabit the rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil, as well as the smaller tributary drainage called rio Nhamundá (which enters the Amazon downstream of its confluence with the Negro).
- Within the rio Negro system, it occurs in various affluents, including the rios Branco, Padauari, and Marauiá.
-
Habitat:
- These tetras prefer sluggish tributaries, side arms, and forest lakes.
- They often associate with submerged woody structures such as roots, fallen branches, overhanging riparian vegetation, or aquatic plants.
- The water they inhabit typically has negligible dissolved mineral content, is poorly buffered, and appears brown due to the gradual release of tannins and organic acids from decaying plant material.
- For instance, in the rio Padauari, they’ve been collected close to the community of Tapera, where locals throw food scraps and wash clothes.
- Other fish species sharing their habitat include Hemigrammus analis, Hyphessobrycon ex gr. bentosi, Paracheirodon axelrodi, and more.
-
Appearance and Behavior:
- The Hyphessobrycon socolofi is a peaceful schooling fish that thrives when kept in groups of at least 6 specimens.
- They exhibit better coloration when maintained in a well-furnished aquarium with live plants and a dark substrate.
- Their striking appearance includes a bleeding heart-like red patch on their body, making them a delightful addition to any community tank.
