Description

Beaufortia kweichowensis, commonly known as the Chinese Hillstream Loach or Butterfly Loach, is a fascinating freshwater fish prized for its unique appearance and specialized habitat needs. 


Species Overview

  • Scientific Name: Beaufortia kweichowensis
  • Common Names: Butterfly Loach, Chinese Sucker Fish, Hong Kong Pleco, UFO Pleco
  • Family: Gastromyzontidae
  • Size: Up to 7.5 cm (3 inches)
  • Lifespan: 5–6 years
  • Temperament: Peaceful, but can be mildly territorial with conspecifics
  • Diet: Omnivore (algae, biofilm, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein)

Natural Habitat

  • Origin: Xi Jiang River system, Southern China (Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong)
  • Environment: Shallow, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated streams with rocky substrates and minimal vegetation 
  • Adaptations:
    • Flattened body and fused pelvic fins form suction cups for clinging to rocks
    • Excellent at grazing biofilm and algae from surfaces

Aquarium Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15 gallons for one; 30+ gallons for a group
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 18–24°C (65–75°F)
    • pH: 6.5–8.0
    • Hardness: 4–12 dGH
    • Nitrates: <20 ppm
  • Setup:
    • Strong water flow and high oxygenation (powerheads, airstones)
    • Rocky decor with smooth stones for grazing
    • Minimal plants; algae growth encouraged
    • Tight-fitting lid (they can climb glass!)

Feeding

  • Natural Diet: Algae, biofilm, microorganisms
  • In Captivity:
    • Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched veggies (zucchini, spinach)
    • Occasional protein (bloodworms, daphnia)
    • Avoid high-protein diets to prevent internal issues
  • Tip: Grow algae on rocks in a separate container and rotate them into the tank 

Behavior & Compatibility

  • Social Structure: Best kept in groups of 4–6
  • Behavior:
    • Peaceful but males may defend feeding spots
    • Females tend to group in quieter areas
  • Tankmates: Other peaceful, cool-water species like small rasboras, gobies, or shrimp
